Abstract

This study, entitled Implementation of the Open-Ended Approach to Improve the Representation of Mathematical Ability Junior High School Students. Against the background by the gap between the importance of representation of mathematical ability in mathematics and reality which shows that the representation of students' abilities are lacking, this study aims to determine the increase in the ability of students through the application of mathematical representation approach to Open-Ended, and compare it with students receiving conventional learning. In addition, another objective was to determine students' attitudes toward the Open-Ended approach. The method used in this study is the method of Quasi Experiments with Design Control group pretest and Postes. The population in this study were all students in grade VIII SMPN 1 Bandung. The sample in this study were two classes of class VIII, one class as the class of a given experimental treatment, one class as the control class. The research data obtained through testing the ability of mathematical representation of students, student questionnaires, observation sheets, and interviews. The results showed that the increased ability of students who are learning mathematical representation using the Open-Ended approach is better than increasing the representation of mathematical abilities of students who use conventional learning. In general, students gave a positive attitude towards the Open-Ended approach.
