Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa proses penerjemahan cerita pendek “The Gift of the Magi” (Henry, 1906) dari Bahasa Inggris menjadi Bahasa Indonesia, yang telah diterjemahkan oleh Mahasiswa Bahasa Inggris di sebuah Universitas di Bandung, menemukan masalah oleh mahasiswa (Nord, 1991), dan mahasiswa mampu menemukan solusi terhadap masalah mereka. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode gambaran kualitatif yang dikemukakan oleh Creswell (2012). Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan dari empat belas mahasiswa dan di analisa menggunakan proses penerjemahan Newmark (1988) dan kriteria menerjemahkan yang baik milik Larson (1984) dalam konteks ketepatan, kejelasan dan kealamiannya. Proses tersebut dibagi menjadi dua kategori: proses teknis dan proses ilmu kebahasaan. Proses teknis mencakup: membangun atmosfir dan suasana untuk menerjemahkan, mencari tahu peralatan yang menunjang untuk menerjemahkan, membuat draf terjemahan, memparafrase draf, menyunting draf akhir dan mengirimkan hasil terjemahan. Proses ilmu kebahasaan mencakup: dua metode pendekatan, membaca perkalimat dan membaca teks secara keseluruhan; empat tingkat penerjemahan, yaitu tingkat penerjemahan kata perkata, tingkat penerjemahan yang padu, tingkat penerjemahan yang membutuhkan acuan sampai tingkat penerjemahan yang alamiah; dan revisi. Pada prosesnya, terbukti bahwa setiap mahasiswa menemukan masalah dalam penerjemahan seperti peralatan penerjemahan yang tradisional, acuan yang tidak dapat dipercaya, tidak mencari korektor, sambungan dan daya listrik, kata-kata yang tidak biasa, kalimat kompleks, jenis teks yang tidak biasa dan manajemen waktu. Solusi yang ditemukan oleh mahasiswa adalah menggunakan peralatan elektornik, menggunakan acuan yang terpercaya, menyunting teks terus menerus, menggunakan warung internet yang bagus, mencari acuan yang terpercaya, menggunakan kamus dan buku pelajaran, membaca hasil terjemahan lain dan mengirimkan hasil terjemahan dengan kualitas yang baik. ; This research is aimed to analyzing the process of translating a short story “The Gift of the Magi” (Henry, 1906) from English to Indonesian done by English Students at a State University in Bandung, problems encountered by the students (Nord, 1991), and exploring the solutions done by the students to cope with their problems. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method as proposed by Creswell (2012). The data were collected from fourteen students, and analyzed by Newmark’s (1988) process of translation and Larson’s (1984) criteria of good translation in terms of accuracy, clarity and naturalness. The process were divided into two categories: technical process and linguistic process. The technical processes covered: building the atmosphere or mood to translate, finding out the supporting tools to translate, drafting the translation, paraphrasing the draft, editing the final draft and submitting the translation works. The linguistic processes covered: two methods of approach covering reading sentence by sentence and reading the whole text; four levels of translation that is textual level of translation, cohesive level of translation, referential level of translation to naturalness level of translation; and revision. In the process, it is proven that student’s encountered problems of translation such as conventional tools, untrustworthy references, did not use proofreaders, connectivity or power supply, unfamiliar vocabulary, complex sentence, unfamiliar genre and time management. The solutions done by the students involved using electronic tools, using trustworthy references, edit the text constantly, using a good internet café, looking for trustworthy references, using dictionary or textbook, read another translated text and submit the text with good quality.
