Abstract
----- The aim of this study was to determine how finger painting activities can develop fine motor skills of children aged 4-5 years. The development of child's fine motor aspects is very important because it supports the child's independent ability in everyday life, as well as control the emotions that exist within him/her. Therefore, it is necessary to know what can be done to improve children's fine motor skills. The formulation of the problems in this study included: (1) How to apply finger painting activities in improving children's fine motor development; and (2) How was the improvement of children's fine motor development after finger painting activities. The method used in this research was qualitative with a literature study design. The data sources of this study were documents in the form of articles, journals, and books. The results of the study were reviewed from sources which were analyzed in depth. The result of the study showed that finger painting was an effective and efficient learning activity, especially to develop children's fine motor skills, due to the fact that finger painting: (1) Train children's fine motor skills involving small muscles and nerve maturity, (2) Introduce the concept of mixing primary colors, so that they become secondary and tertiary colors, (3) Train children's imagination and creativity, (4) Develop eye and hand coordination, (5) Rely on the aesthetics of color beauty, (6) Help children express their feelings through painting. Every child is able to reach the optimal stage of fine motor development as long as they get the right stimulation, because every child phase requires stimulation to develop their mental and fine motor skills.
