Abstract
The low number of graduates produced from secondary and higher education in Indonesia has created a skills gap between student competencies and industry needs. Factors such as the wrong major, study load, tracking system, and lack of flexibility in educational units also contribute to this condition. Following up on this problem, the government implementedThe Elective Subject Selection Program (PMPP) in the Kurikulum Merdeka. This research aims to examine students' perceptions of PMPP and prove the differences in perceptions that students have when viewed from several aspects. A quantitative study with survey methods and questionnaire instruments was applied in this research. A total of 319 respondents who were grade 12 students from 5 first-generation Sekolah Penggerak in Bandung City were involved in this research. Research findings show that overall PMPP can give students freedom in choosing elective subjects but is less relevant to students' real lives. However, the study also found that the support provided by schools was still less than optimal in implementing PMPP. Students' perceptions of PMPP in this study also showed significant differences when viewed from several aspects, including gender, goals after graduating from school, parents' educational background, economic conditions, and where the students went to school. Therefore, this study recommends further assistance regarding students' rationality in choosing elective subjects, which can be realized by referring to the concept of return on education and rotation classes, as well as a review of government regulations related to the implementation of PMPP. Apart from that, research can be used as an additional reference for evaluating the implementation of PMPP in the Kurikulum Merdeka in facilitating students' talents, interests, and potential.
