    Abstract

    This research paper analyzed the stereotypes of Javanese people in four novelettes written by Habbiburrahman El-Shirazy. They are Pudarnya Pesona Cleopatra, Takbir Cinta Zahrana, Dalam Mihrab Cinta, and Mahkota Cinta. The study aimed at finding the answers to the main research question: “How are Javanese stereotypes constructed in the stories?” To answer the formulated research question, the study employed a descriptive study with qualitative approach. The data were collected in the form of textual evidences. The data gained were classified and further analyzed by means of representation theory within the cultural study perspective. It involves the construction of identity through the dominant images found in a culture. The results of the study show that Javanese stereotypes are constructed inconsistently. Framed by the cultural study perspective, the stereotypes are associated with identities and both are unstable and contingent on social context. Javanese people hold stereotypes about how individuals will behave as a result of their age, gender, social status, and role.
