Abstract
ABSTRACT Speaking has been one of the biggest challenges for EFL students to master. Considering the importance of communication features of a language, as well as the demand of modern society to integrate technology and digital media into almost every part of life, an innovative change is imperative. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the use of video-based platform features, particularly Flipgrid, in assisting students’ speaking performance. This study attempts to achieve its objective by answering the following questions: 1) Does the utilization of Flipgrid’s features help students in improving their speaking performance? and 2) How is the students’ perspective in using Flipgrid in the classroom? The data will be collected from a high school classroom in the West Java area using the instruments of pretest and posttest and questionnaires. The results demonstrate that the features assisted the students in gaining better performance in their speaking, as indicated by the increased score in their posttest compared to their pretest. The perception of the students regarding the use of Flipgrid is also considered rather positive, as indicated by the result of the questionnaires. However, this study has its limitations in terms of instruments. This study solely used a quantitative approach to gain and analyze the data; hence, there is a lack of depth in terms of the information and data collected. Thus, this study suggests future research employ different research designs with qualitative research, along with its instruments such as classroom observation and interview, to gain better and more complete data. Keywords: EFL students, Flipgrid, online platforms, speaking problems, video-based discussion platform ABSTRAK Berbicara telah menjadi salah satu tantangan terbesar untuk dikuasai bagi siswa EFL. Mengingat pentingnya fitur dari komunikasi dari sebuah Bahasa beserta tuntutan masyarakat modern untuk mengintegrasikan teknologi dan digital media dalam setiap hamper setiap aspek kehidupan, perubahan yang inovatif sangatlah diperlukan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki keefektifan dari penggunaan platform diskusi video, seperti Flipgrid, dalam membantu performa berbicara siswa. Penelitian ini berupaya untuk memenuhi tujuannya dengan menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan berikut: 1) Apakah pemanfaatan fitur Flipgrid membantu siswa dalam meningkatan penampilan berbicara mereka? dan 2) Bagaimana pandangan siswa terhadap penggunaan Flipgrid di kelas? Data dikumpulkan dari satu Sekolah Menengah Atas di Jawa Barat menggunakan intrumen pretest dan posttest dan kuesioner. Hasilnya mendemonstrasikan bahwa penggunaan Flipgrid membantu siswa dalam meningkatkan performa berbicara mereka, seperti yang diindikasikan dalam penignkatan hasil posttest dibandingkan dengan pretest. Persepsi siswa terkait Flipgrid juga termasuk positif, sesuai dengan hasil dari kuesioner. Akan tetapi, penelitian ini memiliki keterbatasan dalam hal instrument. Penelitian ini hanya menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif untuk memperoleh dan mengolah data; Maka, ada kekurangan berupa infromasi dan data yang dikumpulkan kurang mendalam. Maka dari itu, penelitian ini menyarankan untuk penelitian mendatang untuk menerapkan desain penelitian yang berbeda menggunakan penelitan kualitatif, dengan instrument seperti pengamatan kelas dan wawancara untuk memperoleh data yang lebih baik dan lengkap.
