Abstract
Abstract: The research was aimed at discovering the effectiveness of chain of short message service of vocabulary in enhancing high school students’ vocabulary and finding out the students’ responses toward the technique. This technique was one of the intentional learning strategies applied as complementary activity included two steps: teacher sent the vocabulary and the students continued the vocabulary as a chain message in which the last student sent back to the teacher as a confirmation that all the students in the experimental group had received the message. The subjects of the research were second grade students of Senior High School in Bandung in which one class was divided into experimental group and control group. Each group consists of 15 students. In collecting the data, the quasi-experimental desaign was utilized. The mean scores of the pre-test were the bases scores to identify the initial participants’ learning framework. Therefore, the students were given a post-test after conducting 20 days of the activity (four meetings) in which they got five different vocabularies and 100 different vocabularies at the end of the activity. Results showed that the students conducting the chain of short message service of vocabulary had improved thier vocabulary more than control group. It was proved by the greater gap of scores between pre-test and post-test from experimental group. The discussion of the questionnaire analysis discovered some findings that the Chain of Short Message Service of Vocabulary has a lot of benefits in teaching vocabulary, such as giving additional time to learn as complementary activity outside the classroom, helping student to enrich their vocabulary especially verb, and giving students chance to a joyful learning through their mobile phones instead of using them only for playing game, texting, and browsing. Therefore, it could be said that the students’ responses toward the Chain of Short Message Service of Vocabulary technique were positive. Keywords: Short Message Service, intentional learning, vocabulary mastery Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kerungkasan dari rantai pesan pendek berisi kosakata dalam meningkatkan perbendaharaan kosakata bahasa inggris siswa menengah atas dan mencari tahu respon siswa terhadap teknik ini. Teknik ini merupakan salah satu strategi dari intentional learning yang diaplikasikan sebagai aktifitas pelengkap yang terdiri dari 2 langkah: guru mengirim kosakata dan kemudian siswa melanjutkan kosakata tersebut sebagai pesan berantai dimana siswa terakhir pada rantai pesan mengirimkan kembali ke guru sebagai konfirmasi bahwa seluruh siswa dalam kelompok eksperimen telah menerima pesan tersebut. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa-siswi kelas 2 SMA di Bandung dimana satu kelas dibagi dua kedalam kelompok ekperimen dan kelompok kontrol. Setiap kelompok terdiri dari 15 siswa. Dalam mengumpulkan data, desain yang digunakan adalah kuasi-eksperimental. Skor mean dari pre-test adalah tolak ukur skor untuk mengidentifikasi kemampuan dasar siswa siswi. Kemudian, siswa diberikan post-test setelah melakukan 20 hari kegiatan tersebut (4 pertemuan) dimana setiap harinya siswa mendapatkan 5 kosakata berbeda dan di akhir kegiatan siswa mendapatkan 100 kosakata. Hasil menunjukan bahwa siswa yang melaksanakan rantai pesan pendek ini berhasil meningkatkan jumlah kosakata mereka dibandingkan dengan kelompok kontrol. Hal tersebut dapat dibuktikan melalui perbedaan skor yang lebih besar antara pre-test dan post-test dari kelompok eksperimen. Diskusi terhadap analisis kuesioner menemukan beberapa penemuan bahwa teknik rantai pesan pendek berisi kosakata ini memiliki banyak keuntungan dalam pembelajaran kosakata, seperti memberikan waktu tambahan untuk belajar sebagai kegiatan pelengkap di luar kelas, membantu siswa untuk memperkaya kosakata mereka khususnya kata kerja, dan memberikan siswa kesempatan kepada pembelajaran yang menyenangkan melalui telepon genggam mereka daripada menggunakan telepon genggam hanya untuk bermain game, mengirim pesan, dan browsing. Akhirnya, dapat dikatakan bahwa respon siswa terhadap teknik rantai pesan pendek berisi kosakata adalah positif. Kata kunci: Pesan pendek, pembelajaran intentional, penguasaan kosakata
