Abstract

This research paper attempts to describe the main character’s insanity and find out the cause of the main character’s insanity in a novel entitled The Blind Owl by Sadeq Hedayat. It uses Freudian psychoanalysis criticism to analyze the novel. In coping with literature, psychoanalytic criticism is a form of literary criticism which applies some techniques of psychoanalysis to the interpretation of literature. There is a technique of psychoanalysis applied in this study namely Free Association Method. Free Association Method is a method about which one talks freely in order to bring the repressed wishes in the unconscious area into the conscious area. Through Free Association Method, the main character’s narration is analyzed to describe his insanity and find the cause of his insanity. It comes to conclusion that the main character’s insanity is described as the main character’s self-identity crisis that he cannot identify his identity and other people’s identities, dominant influence of unconsciousness and hallucinations, unstable thoughts and judgments, as well as unusual ideas and actions. In addition, the main character’s insanity is caused by the repressed sexual desire to his wife, as well as trauma because of the memories of his family and childhood, wife’s treatment, and humiliation from his wife’s lover.
