Abstract
Entitled Good Women in Three Grimm’s Fairy Tales, the present study analyses the three tales in Grimm’s Fairy Tales (Snow-White, Briar Rose, and The Goose-Girl) using gender role theory by Marcia R. Lieberman (1986). The study aims to identify the binary characters of good and evil which are developed between two extreme characterizations of main female characters. The study also leads to find how good women are labeled and what destinies are assigned to them that is built in the three tales. The study uses qualitative descriptive design with textual analysis method. The results of the analysis are presented in three categories of gender stereotypes according to Susan Golombok and Robyn Fivush (1994) which are physical characteristic, role behavior, and occupation. The three categories show that in the physical characteristic category, good women are generally beautiful; in the role behaviour category, good women are labeled as naïve, passive, and submissive; and in the occupation category, good women are confined in the domestic sphere, and labeled as being dependent on men. The study also finds that in Grimm’s Fairy Tales, destinies for good women fall into men-dependent destiny and family-oriented destiny.
