Abstract

This research paper is entitled "The Portrayal of a Contemporary Chinese Woman in the Novel Shanghai Baby by Zhou Wei Hur. It purposes to find out characteristics of contemporary Chinese woman and feminism issues raised in the novel. Qualitative descriptive method was applied in this research. Close reading strategy was done to collect textual evidences relating to the characteristics of Coco as the main woman character for data of this research. Further, the data was classified accordingly to two classifications namely Coco's characteristics and characterizations. Feminism issues in the novel were analyzed through existentialist feminism perspective by applying the four strategies proposed in existentialist feminism namely woman can work, woman can become an intellectual being, woman can create social transformation and woman must reject the internalization of her otherness. The finding shows that Coco has some characteristics e.g. being independent, smart, active and able to decide her future. These characteristics are different from most women's characteristics in China who are still crucified by some traditional values. In this case, they tend to be passive, powerless and unable to decide their own future. According to existentialist feminism perspective, Shanghai Baby has signified the spirit of existentialist feminism because Coco has app1ied the four strategies offered by existentialist feminism namely woman can work, woman can become an intellectual being, woman can create social transformation and woman must reject the internalization if her otherness.
