    Abstract

    Discourse analysis which recently has been developing rapidly is not a new concept in language study. Its influence on different field of study is so conspicouous in the beginning of 1980's. It is the result of a growing process started by Panini in India and the rhetoric experts of ancient Greek. Yet, in Indonesia, the teaching of Indonesian language in schools has not much touched the highest level of language. So the students are able to know various kind of linguistic aspects such as the form and the meaning of words, correct and incorrect sentences, but they are not able to use the correct sentences in a situational expression. State or problems This research is focused on the main problems: (1) which linguistic forms and meanings regulate the cohesive and coherent mechamisms in Indonesian texbook discourses of elementary school? (2) Between the cohesion and the coherence, which of them affects the readability of Indonesian texbook discourses used in elementary school?
