Abstract

Namun dalam kasus Edward Kenway kerekter ini tidak dapat sepenuhnya menyelesaikan hero’s journey, dikarenakan anti-hero kekurangan kualitas dibandingkan traditional hero.;---Character and characterization can be considered as two of the most important elements of a literary work. A character can be a person, animal, or inanimate object found within a literary work to support the plot and story; meanwhile, characterization is how the characters are portrayed and presented in the literary work itself. The novel Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag (2013) by Oliver Bowden contains unique character and characterization where the main character, Edward Kenway, is portrayed as an anti-hero. In light of this, the present research aims to analyze the character Edward Kenway by drawing on the framework of Campbell’s (1972) hero’s journey. The analysis of Kenway’s actions and character development point to the fact that an anti-hero can, it turns out, also undergo a hero’s journey. In the case of Edward Kenway, however, he did not complete the journey, since an anti-hero lacks some of the qualities of a traditional hero.
