Abstract

The ability to write well, especially in English, is becoming increasingly important in our global community. However, writing is not easy and errors are commonly found in students’ writing as they get difficulties in developing the content of their writing. For that reason, it is necessary for teachers to choose an appropriate way to teach writing that can support students to gather their ideas in writing. Learning through photographs is an appropriate way to support students to gather ideas in writing. This study aims to investigate the use of photographs in teaching and learning writing descriptive text and to what extent the use of photographs improves students’ ability in writing descriptive text. Using a quasi-experimental design conducted through tests (pretest and posttest), the result shows that the use of photographs, can improve students’ writing ability. From the five aspects of writing, the highest improvement of the students’ writing skill is discourse with mean N-Gain score 0.23, followed by genre with the mean of N-Gain score 0.22, graphic feature with the mean score 0.21, register with mean of N-Gain score 0.05, and grammar with mean of N-Gain score 0.19. The study also provides suggestions for further research;--- Kemampuan untuk menulis dengan baik, terutama dalam bahasa Inggris, menjadi semakin penting dalam dunia global saat ini. Namun, menulis tidaklah mudah dan kesalahan biasanya ditemukan pada tulisan siswa karena mereka mengalami kesulitan dalam mengembangkan isi tulisan. Oleh karena itu, guru perlu memilih cara yang tepat untuk mengajarkan menulis yang dapat mendukung siswa untuk mengumpulkan gagasan mereka secara tertulis. Belajar melalui foto adalah cara yang tepat untuk mendukung siswa mengumpulkan gagasan secara tertulis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui penggunaan foto dalam pembelajaran menulis teks deskriptif dan sampai sejauh mana penggunaan foto dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif. Dengan menggunakan desain kuasi-eksperimental yang dilakukan melalui tes (pretest dan posttest), hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan foto dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa. Dari kelima aspek penulisan tersebut, peningkatan kemampuan menulis siswa yang tertinggi adalah dari aspek discourse dengan nilai rata-rata N-Gain 0,23, diikuti oleh genre dengan nilai rata-rata N-Gain 0,22, graphic feature dengan nilai rata-rata N-Gain 0,21, register dengan nilai rata-rata N-Gain 0,05, dan grammar dengan nilai rata-rata N-Gain 0,19. Penelitian ini juga memberikan saran untuk penelitian lebih lanjut
