Abstract
Motherhood is readily observable in our daily life. However, motherhood is not easy to define since it may be applicable to various contexts. Motherhood is easy to recognize in real life; however, it is not easy to recognize in the text. This research entitled “An Analysis of Motherhood in Emma Donoghue’s Room” attempts to reveal motherhood that is constructed in the novel. The data are taken from narrations and dialogues in the novel that indicate traces of motherhood. Rich’s (1976) theory of motherhood is used to analyze the data, in which motherhood is identified through its indicators. This research shows the complex nature of motherhood since motherhood is superimposed upon each other. Based on the analysis, it is found that there are two categories of motherhood which are constructed in the novel, i.e. motherhood as institution, which depicts social goals and cultural goals, and motherhood as experience, which depicts the instinct of the mother in mothering her son. Keywords: motherhood, motherhood as institution, motherhood as experience Motherhood dapat kita lihat di sekitar kita. Namun, bukan hal mudah untuk mendefinisikannya karena motherhood memiliki beragam konteks. Motherhood mudah dikenali di kehidupan nyata, namun tidak mudah dikenali di dalam teks. Penelitian ini yang berjudul “An Analysis of Motherhood in Emma Donoghue’s Room” bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan motherhood yang dibangun di dalam novel tersebut. Teori yang dikemukakan oleh Rich (1976) digunakan untuk menganalisis data, yang m ana motherhood diidentifikasi melalui indikatornya. Penelitian ini menunjukkan kerumitan motherhood karena beragam motherhood berkaitan satu sama lain. Analisis dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada dua kategori motherhood yang dibangun di dalam novel tersebut, yaitu motherhood as institution, yang menunjukkan adanya social goals dan cultural goals, dan mothetrhood as experience, yang menunjukkan insting seorang ibu terhadap anaknya.
