Abstract

The research paper analyzes the representation of women’s power which is viewed from feminist perspective in the three short stories from Maureen Mc.Hugh’s collection book entitled Mothers and Other monster. The aim of the study is to find out : (1) In what ways do the three short stories represent women’s power viewed from feminist perspective? (2) What do these forms of power signify? The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach to answer the research questions above. This research employs close reading strategy in which the three short stories; The Lincoln Train, Oversite, Presence is read thoroughly and carefully to determine the main issue of the study and to collect data. Afterwards, the data collected in the form of textual evidences is analyzed by means of postmodern feminism proposed by Helena Cixous. The text indicated that there are six forms of power that women’s characters have; knowledge, physical strength, verbal skill, caring , decision making, and management skills. Then, these exercises of power are scrutinized to see the signification. These powers are presented among Clara Corbett and Elizabeth Loudon in The Lincoln Train, Clara and Renata in Oversite, and Mila in Presence.
