Abstract

This research investigated how MURDER strategy could help develop students’ comprehension and how the participants respond to its implementation. The MURDER strategy used in this research was adapted from Dansereau et al. (1978) and McDonald et al. (1985). However, a modification to MURDER strategy was made by involving the role of teacher because in this research, the MURDER strategy was used in real reading class. The study was conducted to the sixth semester students of English department in a state Islamic university in Bandung. This study used a qualitative research design, involving the characteristics of a case study. The data were collected from the worksheet of MURDER strategy, self-reflection, observation, and questionnaire. Daily comprehension test and pre-test and post-test of TOEFL-like reading score were also used to support the finding. The result of the study revealed that MURDER strategy 1) could generally help develop the students’ comprehension in understanding the text as reflected from their identification on main idea, semantic map, and summary writing, 2) promoted the participants’ metacognitive skill in reading activity as shown by the result of comprehension monitoring in detecting sheet and self-reflection (review phase), and 3) maintained the participant to use background knowledge in reading activity as reflected in the elaborating activity. Despite these findings, some technical issues were unavoidable due to the natural setting of this study. Keywords: MURDER, reading comprehension, students’ responses Studi ini meneliti bagaimana strategi pembelajaran MURDER bisa membantu mengembangkan pemahaman siswa dalam membaca dan bagaimana siswa me respon terhadap penerapan model pembelajaran tersebut. Pembelajaran strategi MURDER dalam studi ini merupakan adaptasi dari penelitian Danserau et al. (1978) dan McDonald et al. (1985). Modifikasi telah dilakukan dalam penelitian ini yaitu dengan menambahkan peran guru. Peran guru dilibatkan karena pembelajaran ini diterapkan dalam pelajaran di kelas Reading. Studi ini dilakukan di sebuah perguruan tinggi islam negeri di Bandung pada mahasiswa semester enam jurusan pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Studi ini merupakan sebuah studi kasus yang menggunakan desain kualitatif dan sumber data yang diambil untuk penelitian ini adalah lembar kerja MURDER, self-reflection, observasi dan kuesioner. Tes pemahaman harian (daily comprehension test) dan skor dari pre-test post-tes TOEFL-like reading test juga diambil dan digunakan sebagai data pendukung untuk penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa strategi pembelajaran MURDER 1) secara umum membantu mengembangkan pemahaman siswa dalam membaca seperti yang terlihat pada proses mengidentifikasi ide pokok, semantic map, dan menulis summary, 2) dapat mempromosikan proses berpikir metacognitive siswa seperti yang diperlihatkan dalam memonitor pemahaman membaca pada kegiatan detecting sheet dan self-reflection (review phase), dan 3) membuat siswa untuk menggunakan pengetahuannya (background knowldege) dalam kegiatan membaca seperti yang direfleksikan dalam kegiatan elaborating activity. Disamping semua temuan yang dijelaskan diatas, beberapa isu yang bersifat teknis tidak dapat dihindarkan selama proses penelitian karena studi ini dilakukan dalam setting pembelajaran alami yang sebenarnya.
