    Abstract

    This study explores Yuta Okkotsu’s identity formation in the Japanese comic or manga Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (2021) through the lens of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey theory. The manga features Yuta, a high school student, as he makes his transformation from isolation to empowerment while being haunted by the cursed spirit of his childhood friend Rika Orimoto. This study aims to explore how Yuta’s heroic journey impacts Yuta’s identity formation from an ordinary student to a hero. A qualitative approach is applied with an emphasis on the narrative stages of the Hero’s Journey. This involves a thorough analysis of the dialogue, script, and character interactions in each stage in order to identify recurrent themes that are connected to Yuta’s transformation. The results of the study show that Yuta Okkotsu’s identity formation aligns with the Hero’s Journey. The story includes typical hero’s journey elements such as separation, adventure, and return, which provide space and time for Yuta to develop and become a hero. The hero which is formed emphasizes the significance of personal growth and self-discovery as part of identity formation.
