Abstract

Pembelajaran bahasa dan budaya asing merupakan proses kompleks yang seringkali
dihadapkan pada berbagai kendala, misalnya pada pembelajaran oleh siswa BIPA
(Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing) asal Amerika Serikat di Indonesia Multi
Language Acquisition Center (IMLAC). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk
mengidentifikasi dan menganalisis kendala-kendala dalam proses pemerolehan
bahasa dan budaya Indonesia oleh siswa BIPA serta merumuskan strategi-strategi
yang efektif untuk mengatasi kendala tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan
pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan melalui observasi, wawancara, analisis
dokumen, dan catatan dari siswa. Hasil penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa siswa
menghadapi berbagai kendala terkait aspek linguistik (fonologi, sintaksis,
sosiolinguistik, dan pragmatik) dan pembelajaran (pengajaran dan bahan ajar).
Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa kendala-kendala tersebut mempengaruhi
efektivitas pembelajaran bahasa dan budaya Indonesia di IMLAC. Terlebih lagi,
strategi-strategi efektif sangat diperlukan guna meningkatkan pengalaman belajar
siswa dalam memperoleh bahasa dan budaya Indonesia. Hasil dari penelitian ini
diharapkan dapat memberikan strategi-strategi efektif untuk meningkatkan
pengalaman belajar siswa, yang diharapkan dapat berkontribusi pada peningkatan
kualitas lingkungan belajar siswa BIPA di IMLAC.

Learning a foreign language and culture is a complex process often faced with
various challenges, as seen in the experience of BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia bagi
Penutur Asing) students from the United States at the Indonesian Multi Language
Acquisition Center (IMLAC). This study aims to identify and analyze the obstacles
in the process of acquiring Indonesian language and culture by BIPA students and
to formulate effective strategies to overcome these challenges. The research
employs a descriptive qualitative approach through observations, interviews,
document analysis, and students' diaries. The findings reveal that students face
various challenges related to linguistic aspects (phonology, syntax,
sociolinguistics, and pragmatics) and learning aspects (teaching and instructional
materials). The study concludes that these challenges significantly affect the
effectiveness of Indonesian language and culture learning at IMLAC. Moreover,
effective strategies are essential to enhance students' learning experience in
acquiring Indonesian language and culture. The results of this study are expected
to provide effective strategies to improve students' learning experience, which may
contribute to enhancing the quality of the BIPA learning environment at IMLAC.
