Abstract

The burning issue of the study is about issues on the implementation of portfolio assessment in the teaching of writing. Writing is very important, therefore, a good and interesting teaching writing technique is necessary. However, a conventional technique in teaching writing does not seem to motivate the students and make a significant progress. That is why portfolio is proposed as the alternative way to improve students’ writing skills. The aim of the study was to describe students’ perceptions toward writing portfolio assessment and to find out the perceived advantages for the students in using portfolio as their assessment. The study used qualitative design with descriptive study. The study involved one class of the first year students of one Public University in Bandung as the sample. The findings from the surveys, questionnaires, interviews showed that almost all students were interested in using portfolio as their assessment. In reference to the result of the study, the conclusion was drawn that portfolio are learning with the implementation of portfolio assessment provides better learning results than the ordinary learning.
