Abstract

The research entitled The Non-observance of Conversational Maxims in Si Kabayan Tapa is aimed at identifying the non-observance of conversational implicature used by the speakers. It is also to discover the speaker’s motivation behind the use of non-observance of conversational implicature within their conversation. The data are investigated based on Cooperative Principle and type of non-observance of maxims proposed by Grice. The research method that is used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The result of the analysis shows the non-observance of maxims occurred in Si Kabayan Tapa are Violating, Flouting, Opting out, Infringing, and Suspending which were mostly did not observe the Maxim of Quantity. While, the speaker’s motivation in relation to the politeness’s FTA are positive and negative face. Those motivations are mostly appeared in violating and flouting the maxim, especially the maxim of quantity.
