Abstract
Expository methods, which are often considered passive and teacher-centric, are still used in some schools, despite calls for a more student-centered learning approach. This study aims to observe and analyze the use of expository methods in a high school in Bandung, and to evaluate the effectiveness and relevance of this method in the context of education in the 21st century. This study uses a qualitative approach to understand how expository methods can remain relevant in meeting 21st-century competencies, such as critical and creative thinking. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with mathematics teachers who use expository methods, and test instruments for students who take part in learning with expository methods. Expository methods have shortcomings in developing important skills such as communication and collaboration skills in students, however, this method is still effective in improving critical and creative thinking skills which are also important for students. Furthermore, expository methods can address several educational challenges in Indonesia, including the need to deliver a lot of material in a limited time and manage large classes.
