Abstract

The study explores power as exercised in a marriage. The marriage referred to in this study indicated a complicated relation between husband, wife, family, in-laws, and parliaments because it is a marriage between Queen Charlotte and King George, as depicted in Julia Quinn's novel Queen Charlotte (2023). The study aims to analyse how power is exercised within an aristocratic marriage, which happened in the past in a relatively recent novel. Qualitative textual analysis and Foucault's theory of power (1982) were incorporated into the analysis of this novel. The analysis reveals that in the novel, power is exercised through the creation of conflicts in two discourses: institutional and spousal discourses. In the discourses, the characters are involved in power relations developed from conflicts. In power relations, it is evident that the dominant participant who has power is King George. However, Queen Charlotte also exercises her share of power, which indicates that she chooses to sacrifice herself and follow the patriarchal way of thinking. Therefore, the study can be seen to frame Queen Charlotte in a patriotic way because she sacrifices herself for her husband's sake and her father's country.
