Abstract
----- The ability to understand student concepts, especially in social studies learning, is important for students to master. The difficulty of receiving material by students is thought to be due to lack of readiness and unmet learning needs of students. This makes this research to find out the effect of the differentiation method to solve the problem. The objectives of this study are: 1) to know the difference in average improvement between students who carry out learning with differentiation methods in social studies learning and students who carry out conventional learning; and 2) to know the effect of learning with differentiation methods on improving concept understanding in social studies learning in elementary schools. The research method used was quasi-experiment with non-equivalent design, namely by giving pre-test and post-test to both groups in social studies learning. This study involved 48 students at SD Negeri 2 Sindangkasih Purwakarta. Based on the results of the study, the conclusions were obtained: 1) The improvement of concept understanding ability of students who received learning with differentiation method is better than students who received conventional learning that is reviewed as a whole; 2) There is an influence between the application of the differentiation method on improving students' concept understanding ability, which is 43.1%.
