Abstract

The research entitled Female English Students” Perception on Sexist Language, a Descriptive Study at English Department of Indonesia University af Education is aimed to find out the response of English female students to sexist language case and to identify their perception on sexist language. The writer decided to choose this topic since sexist language issue has been widely discussed among the linguist, and for the writer noticed that there is a tendency in our society to avoid this kind of language. The respondents of this research are twenty female students of En ghsh department of UPI who are taken randomly. Writers choose descriptive method in doing this research where three instrumenis are used to collect the data, closed-ended guestionnaire, which is aimed to identify female students” perception on sexist language: open-ended guestionnaire, and interview. The purpose of using open-ended guestionnaire and the interview is to find out female students” response to sexist language case. The findings show that most respondents perceive sexist language issue as an overstated problem. They do not pay much attention on it, since the language has become a habit in their daily life. Most of the respondents also react negatively to this issue. They still maintain the language even though they know about this issue. It is also found that the lack of their experience and knowledge about sexist language mnfluences their perception and response on this issue. Furthermore, the write noticed that this is caused by the minimum exposure towards sexist language issue in their daily life.
