Abstract

This study aims to analyze the density of noun phrases from custom regulations for passengers. This study investigates the semantic density of custom regulations that contributes to the degree of readers' understanding of the text and the misinterpretation it may cause. A qualitative study involving linguistic investigation and explanation from the perspective of Halliday´s (1985) Systemic Functional Linguistics was employed. The study relied on the data from twenty-two pages of custom regulations made public on the internet in 2021. The data were analyzed in several steps. First, the complicated noun phrases were recognized. Following identification, the analysis labelled the phrases per page depending on frequency. The data were then categorized based on how frequently they were used. Then, the data were rebuilt into words that can be related to the closest meaning. The final stage discussed the frequency using Maton and Doran's (2019) idea. The results show that the data did not show complexity. This study found the use of 877 everyday noun phrases; and 414 technical noun phrases. More everyday noun phrases used in the customs regulation text suggest that the text has been made easy for readers to read and understand the information.
