Abstract

This research is derived from the problems of language structure concerning with mindset. The disorders appeared between language structure and mindset are found not only in the scientific writing of the students but also that of the teachers. Concerning with the issue, the main problems of this research are: (1) the characteristics pointing out Indonesian language structure based on textual rhetorical approach, language aspect of text and gender; (2) the tendency of student’s figures of speech; (3) the characteristics pointing out the written language based on mindset; (4) textual rhetorical aspect and language aspect of text occurring in the structure of written language; (5) the implication of research output toward learning to write. This study is aimed at finding out and identifying: (1) the characteristics of language structure that is analyzed based on textual rhetorical approach, language aspect of text, and gender, (2) the tendency of student’s figures of speech, (3) the characteristics of language structure based on mindset, (4) textual rhetorical principle and language aspect of text occurring in the structure of written language; and (5) the implication of research output toward learning to write. Since this research relates to language aspect and mindset, it employs the language and mind theories as well as the correlative theories between language and mind. The conceptual methods establishing the underlying theories in this research are textual rhetorical concept (Slobin 1979, Leech 1983), mindset concept (Gregorc 1992), the correlative concept of language and mind (Vygotsky 1962, Bruner 1975), and the concept of language and gender (Thomas and Wareing 1999). This research is a descriptive approach which is conducted by employing the existing method in language research. The method covers three steps; data collection, data analysis and finding presentation. The technique of data collection is carried out through observation and tapping. The data analysis employs “intralingual matching method” and “extralingual matching method,” while the finding presentation uses informal method. Referring to the results of data analysis, the findings are drawn as follows: (1) there is a balanced score in measurement result between the mindset of Sequential Concrete (SC) and Random Abstract (RA) as well as the dominance of Sequential Abstract (SA) and Random Abstract (RA). Consequently, the researcher decides to use another mindset of Sequential Concrete–Random Abstract (SC-RA) and Sequential Abstract–Random Abstract (SA-RA) instead of Sequential Concrete (SC), Sequential Abstract (SA), and Random Concrete (RC) as DePorter and Hemacki stated. (2) the dominant mindset is RA with 50%, SC 32% and the percentage of other mindset; SA, RC, SC-RA and SA-RA is below 10%. In correspondence with this result, DePorter and Hemacki stated that one with RA mindset is greater in number. (3) referring to the analysis of gender, the result shows that RA mindset remains consistent with 46.7% for male respondents and 51.4% for female respondents. (4) Textual rhetorical principle hasn’t fully been applied in general toward mind exploitation in writing. (5) The sentences used to express thought are mainly complex sentences with 72.6%, instead of simple sentences with 27.4%. (6) The sentences that do not begin with subject reach until 64.2%. (7) The use of standard language is not fully employed with only 60.7%. (8) The spelling is also bad since there are only 47.1% occupying standard language in their spelling. (9) The appropriateness of words usage is also poor since there are only 51.6% using proper diction. As a result, this research implies that it is necessary to make a “revitalized learning to write” in colleges. This research recommends that students in any discipline should begin their lecture by learning Indonesian language for the first two semesters focusing on writing or creating a writing course as an alternative subject for the students to gain better skills in writing.
