Abstract

Remaja akhir yang studi di perguruan tinggi menghadapi berbagai tuntutan akademik yang
dapat menimbulkan ketegangan dan depresi, bahkan kegagalan akademik. Untuk mencegah
dan mengatasi dampak negatif tersebut, remaja akhir perlu mengkomunikasikan tuntutan
akademik yang dialaminya kepada orang tua melalui komunikasi yang efektif. Penelitian ini
bertujuan untuk mengetahui gambaran seperti apa komunikasi yang efektif dengan orang tua
menurut persepsi remaja akhir, serta faktor-faktor apa yang dapat mendukung dan menghambat
berkembangnya komunikasi yang efektif antara remaja akhir dan orang tua perihal tuntutan
akademik di perguruan tinggi. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan
metode analisis isi deskripsi. Instrumen penelitian disusun menggunakan open ended question
dan dianalisa secara human coding. Pengolahan data menggunakan metode statistika deskriptif
yang hasilnya disajikan dalam bentuk tabel dan diagram. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 224
responden yang merupakan remaja akhir yang studi di jenjang diploma dan strata satu di 17
perguruan tinggi yang berada di wilayah Bandung Raya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa
sebagian besar remaja akhir berpersepsi bahwa komunikasi dikatakan efektif dengan adanya
pesan yang mendukung, adanya kepedulian dan solusi, adanya saling keterbukaan dan
hubungan yang dekat, serta saling memahami pesan yang disampaikan. Faktor pendukung
komunikasi efektif meliputi adanya kedekatan hubungan dan saling terbuka, adanya dukungan
dan kepedulian dari orang tua, latar belakang pendidikan dan pengetahuan akademik orang tua,
cara pandang dan saling memahami pesan yang disampaikan. Faktor penghambat dipersepsi
dengan kurangnya intensitas pertemuan, faktor internal dalam diri individu, faktor eksternal,
hubungan yang tidak dekat serta kurangnya keterbukaan.

Late adolescents who study in higher education, face some of academic demands, thus making
it possible for inducing stress, depression, and academic failure. To prevent and overcome these
negative impacts, late adolescents need to communicate the academic demands they experience
to their parents, through effective communication. The purpose of this study is to describe what
effective communication with parents looks like, what factors can support or hinder the
development of effective communication between late adolescents and parents regarding
academic demands in higher education. This study uses a quantitative approach along with the
description content analysis method. The research instrument was made using open ended
questions and analyzed by human coding. Processing of data using descriptive statistical
methods which results are presented in the form of tables and diagrams. The sample of this
research was 224 respondents who are currently taking a diploma level education and also
undergraduates students from 17 universities and institutes in Bandung Raya. The result shows
that most of the late adolescents have perception that communication is considered effective
where there are supportive messages, where compasssion and solution are articulated, where
both sides maintain a close relationship and openness, and where both sides can understand
each other. Key factors that charactirize an effective coomunication include a bond and
openness between both sides, support and care by the parents, their academic knowledge and
educational background, and also the perspective and comprehension toward message. The
inhibiting factors are inadequate intensity in togetherness, internal factors of the individual,
external factors, a cold relatioship and also a lack of openness.
