Abstract

kehidupan manusia pada abad ke-21 mengalami perubahan-perubahan yang fundamental terutama dalam hal memperoleh informasi dari media sosial. Isu-isu faktual toleransi dan empati ini seringkali muncul di media sosial dan menjadi isu kontroversial di tengah masyarakat. Tidak jarang isu ini menjadi hal yang menganggu kesatuan dan persatuan. Media sosial juga memberikan kemerdekaan seluas-luasnya bagi para pengguna untuk mengekspresikan dirinya, sikapnya dan pandangan hidupnya, sehingga bisa menjadi satu hal yang bersifat kontorversial. Mengangkat isu-isu kontroversial akan melatih pola pikir siswa, sehingga ia akan belajar bagaimana mengemukakan pendapat, belajar berbeda pendapat, belajar menghormati dan menghargai pendapat bahkan mempertahankan pendapat sesuai dengan yang ia yakini dengan alasan yang jelas. Hal inilah yang menjadi menjadi latar belakang dilaksanakan penelitian ini dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui dan menganalisis peningkatan sikap empati dan toleransai peserta didik menggunakan media sosial facebook dengan materi isu kontroversial dalam proses pembelajaran IPS. Penelitian ini merupakan kuasi eksperimen dengan populasi adalah siswa SMP kelas VII di SMPN 52 Bandung, dengan sampel penelitian kelas VII. 8 sebagai kelas kontrol dan kelas VII.7 sebagai kelas eksperimen. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan pengaruh penerapan media sosial facebook denga materi isu kontroversial pada kelas eksperimen dengan penerapan media powerpint pada kelas control terhadap sikap empati dengan nilai thitung 4,958>nilai ttabel 1,673 dan terhadap nilai toleransi dengan nilai asympt.sig sebesar 0.025 lebih kecil dari 0,05. Penggunaan media sosial dengan materi isu kontroversial dalam pembelajaran IPS lebih efektif dalam meningkatkan sikap empati dan toleransi dibandingkan penggunaan media powerpoint pada kelas kontrol. The 21st century is marked as the century of openness or the century of globalization, meaning that human life in the 21st century has undergone fundamental changes, especially in terms of obtaining information from social media. These factual issues of tolerance and empathy often appear on social media and become controversial issues in society. It is not uncommon for this issue to become something that disturbs unity and unity. Social media also provides the widest possible freedom for users to express themselves, their attitudes and their views on life, so that it can become a controversial issue. Raising controversial issues will train students' mindsets, so that they will learn how to express opinions, learn to differ, learn to respect and value opinions and even defend opinions according to what they believe with clear reasons. This is the background that this research was carried out with the aim of knowing and analyzing the increase in empathy and tolerance of students using social media Facebook with material on controversial issues in the social studies learning process. This study is a quasi-experimental study with a population of class VII junior high school students at SMPN 52 Bandung, with a class VII research sample. 8 as the control class and VII.7 class as the experimental class. The results showed that there were differences in the effect of the application of social media Facebook with material controversial issues in the experimental class with the application of powerpint media in the control class on empathy with a tcount of 4.958> a t-table value of 1.673 and on a tolerance value with an asympt.sig value of 0.025, smaller than 0.05. The use of social media with material on controversial issues in social studies learning is more effective in increasing empathy and tolerance than the use of PowerPoint media in the control class.
