Abstract

In Indonesian context, since mostly the English teachers share the same native language with the students, the occurrence of code-switching as the medium of instruction is inevitable and makes the teachers not to rely completely on English during the teaching and learning process. Besides, there is no fixed agreement on how much code-switching should be used so that the learning could take place especially in the speaking class where much English exposure is expected. It is feared that this use of code-switching by the teachers could hinder students’ learning. To figure those out, this study was performed and intended to investigate the amount and reasons of in-field and out-of-field tutors’ code-switching in facilitating a speaking program, and students’ perspectives on tutors’ code-switching. The study employed a case study approach and multiple data collection to accomplish it. The data were obtained from six classroom observations of an in-field and and an out-of-field tutors, an interview of the in-field and out-of-field tutors concerning their use of code-switching, and a questionnaire distributed to seventy-seven students participating in the speaking program regarding tutors’ use of code-switching. Based on the observation and interview, it was found that there was a variability in terms of the amount of code-switching between the two tutors which was mostly triggered by the proficiency level of the students. However, it was found out that both tutors mostly used code-switching for different functions. The in-field tutor mainly employed code-switching for curriculum access function (39.3%) while the out-of-field one used it more for interpersonal relations (46.2%). Based on the observation, tutors’ code-switching was found to create a productive environment for students that could help them learn English. From the questionnaire, it was found that this use of code-switching by the tutors in facilitating the speaking program was perceived positively by the students in terms of affective, cognitive and behavioral aspects. From those, it could be drawn that tutors’ code-switching was found meaningful as an aid to learn spoken English. However, the frequency of code-switching should be adjusted to the proficiency level of the students.
