    Abstract

    Penelitian ini mengkaji kualitas struktur skematik atau generic structure dan pemilihan fitur leksikogramatikal pada esai argumentatif bahasa Inggris (tipe diskusi) mahasiswa semester lima di salah satu universitas swasta di Jakarta. Dengan turut melibatkan aspek perbedaan gender dan perbedaan tingkat kemampuan bahasa atau language proficiency, penelitian ini menggali potensi kaitan gender dan tingkat LP mahasiswa tersebut dengan kualitas penyusunan struktur skematik dan perbedaan pemilihan fitur leksikogramatikalnya. Penelitian ini mengambil sampel data yaitu 12 esai argumentatif bahasa Inggris mahasiswa tipe diskusi serta menggunakan pisau analisis struktur skematik Gerot dan Wignel, analisis fitur leksikogramatikal ketiga metafungsi bahasa Halliday, dan analisis fitur linguistik gender Mulac, Bradac dan Gibbons. Hasil penelitian menunjukan 2 pola tahapan atau struktur skematik tulisan esai argumentatif bahasa Inggris mahasiswa dan penggunaan berbagai fitur leksikogramatikal antara lain, ditemukan grup nomina kategori generic human dan non human participant, menggunakan verba dengan 5 tipe proses, yaitu material, mental, verbal, relational, dan existential, menggunakan 2 jenis tenses; simple present dan simple past, mengembangkan klausa dengan penggunaan konjungsi additive, comparative, temporal, dan consequentials, penggunaan klausa komoditas pertukaran giving statement, demanding question, dan demanding command, kemudian ditemukan penggunaan modalitas dan klausa polaritas positif negatif. Selain itu, ditemukan pula dalam esai argumentatif mahasiswa yang menunjukan 1 karakteristik bahasa laki-laki, seperti references to quantity (RQ) dan 2 karakteristik bahasa perempuan yaitu reference to emotion (RE) dan mean length sentences (MLS). Berdasarkan temuan dan analisis data tersebut, hasil klasifikasi perbedaan gender dan tingkat LP mahasiswa menunjukan kaitan kedua aspek khususnya terhadap kualitas penyusunan struktur skematik dengan keunggulan gender perempuan daripada laki-laki dan keunggulan mahasiswa ditingkat LP advanced daripada LP intermediate atau beginner. Sementara, data temuan pemilihan leksikogramatikal tersebut menunjukan perbedaan ukuran ketercapaian fungsi sosial melalui pemilihan fitur leksikogramatikal mahasiswa dimana gender perempuan dominan dalam elaborasi argumen namun lemah dalam mempengaruhi pembaca sedangkan gender laki-laki cenderung sedikit argumen atau to the point namun kuat dalam mempengaruhi pembaca lewat pemberian bukti sumber.

    This study investigates the schematic structure or generic structure quality and the lexicogrammatical feature choices of the students’ argumentative essay (discussion type) in fifth semester at the one of private university in Jakarta. By also involving the different aspect of students’ gender and language proficiency level, this study also explores potential relation of students’ gender and language proficiency level with the organization of schematic structure and the different lexicogrammatical feature choices. This study took 12 argumentative essay discussion type as a sample using the schematic structure analysis of Gerot and Wignell, the lexicogrammatical features analysis of Halliday’s three metafunctions, and gender linguistic features analysis Mulac, Bradac, and Gibbons. The result showed 2 pattern or schematic structure of students’ argumentative essay and the used of varieties of lexicogrammatical features, such as found nominal group categorized as generic human and non human participant, used verb with 5 types of process, which are material, mental, verbal, relational, and existential, used 2 kinds of tenses; simple present and simple past, developed clauses using additive, comparative, temporal, and consequentials conjunctives, used clause as commodity exchange giving statement, demanding question, and demanding command, then found the used of modality, polarity positive negative clauses. Besides, it is also found in students’ argumentative essay that showed 1 male gender characteristic, such as references to quantity (RQ) and 2 female gender characteristics which are yaitu reference to emotion (RE) dan mean length sentences (MLS). Based on the research findings, the result of the gender and language proficiency level classification showed relation both aspects especially towards the quality of schematic structure organization with the female dominance than male also dominance of students LP advanced than students LP intermediate or beginner. Meanwhile, data found of lexicogrammatical choices showed different degree of social function successfulness whereas female are dominant in elaboration of argument but weak to persuade reader on the other hand male got less argument or to the point but strong in persuading reading by providing it with source evidence.
