Abstract

For completing the university level, all of the college students in Indonesia are required to write a scientific paper. The purpose of this paper is to enhance their capability in analysing some issues and to report it in a written research paper. Then for over-viewing the content of the undergraduate paper, they have to write an abstract. In a public university in Bandung, the abstract should be translated into one or more languages. The objectives of this research were to identify the translation methods and procedures mostly used in translating abstracts of undergraduate papers. The method used in the research is a descriptive qualitative method. The collected data showed that there were 77 sentences from eight selected abstracts with Literal Translation as the most translation method used (73%). The result also found that the translation procedures used in translating abstract of undergraduate papers were Reduction/Expansion (31%), Transference (18%), Couplets/Triplets (18%), Naturalization (17%), Shift/Transposition (14%), and Cultural Equivalent (2%). The most frequently used translation procedure is Reduction/Expansion. The research only focused on translation methods and procedures. For further research, the researcher suggests that there should be another object that could be explored in abstract translation, such as the quality of the translation abstract of undergraduate papers. Untuk menyelesaikan jenjang perguruan tinggi, seluruh mahasiswa di Indonesia di wajibkan untuk membuat skripsi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam menganaslisa beberapa masalah dan melaporkannya secara tertulis dalam bentuk skripsi. Lalu untuk merangkum isi permasalahan skripsi tersebut, dibuatlah abstrak. Di Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, abstrak harus di terjemahkan ke dalam satu atau lebih bahasa yang lain. Tujuan dari penelitian yang berjudul “Sebuah Analisis Metode dan Prosedur Penerjemahan dalam Abstrak Skripsi” adalah untuk mengidentifikasi metode dan prosedur penerjemahan apa yang paling sering digunakan dalam penerjemahan abstrak skripsi dan metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data menunjukan bahwa terdapat 77 kalimat dari delapan abstrak yang terpilih dengan metode penerjemahan yang paling banyak digunakan adalah Literal Translation (73%). Data juga menunjukan hasil prosedur penerjemahan yang digunakan dalam menerjemahkan abstrak yaitu Reduction/Expansion (31%), Transference (18%), Couplets/Triplets (18%), Naturalization (17%), Shift/Transposition (14%), dan Cultural Equivalent (2%). Dan prosedur penerjemahan yang paling sering digunakan adalah Reduction/Expansion. Penelitian ini hanya berfokus pada metode dan prosedur penerjemahan. Untuk penelitian selanjutnya, peneliti menganjurkan masih banyak hal yang bisa diteliti dalam penerjemahan abstrak, contohnya seperti kualitas terjemahan abstrak skripsi.
