Abstract
The aims of the research are to identify differences in competency of mathematical logical thinking (KBLM), mathematical communication (KKM) and self-directed disposition (SDLD) achievements and enhancements upon students between students learning through a metacognitive strategy approach (PSM) and those of a conventional approach (PKv). Moreover, this research identifies interactions between the learning approach and mathematics prior knowledge group (KAM), student assertion regarding the PSM and student mistakes in KBLM and KKM tests. The design of this research is pretest-postest control group design. The population is students of mathematical statistics course in Kupang Province of East Nusa Tenggara with sample 65 students. The sampling technique is purposive sampling. Two separate classes of a Mathematical Statistics course of at the University in Kupang were randomly selected to be distinguished as an experimental class and a control class. Research instrument covers test of KBLM, KKM, DSDL scales, guide of observations and interviews. Data were analyzed through t-test, Mann-Whitney test, and a two way ANAVA. Research results point a difference between achievements and enhancements in KBLM and KKM in an overall perspective. Viewed from the KAM group, the differences of achievements and enhancements in KBLM occur for those in the top and middle KAM group. There are no differences of achievements and enhancements in DSDL in overall and KAM group perspectives. There are no interactions between the learning approaches and the KAM group towards achievements and enhancements in KBLM and KKM. Further, regarding achievements and enhancements in DSDL, there are found to be interactions between the learning approaches and the KAM group. Assertion of students of the PSM class suggests that metacognitive learning conveys positive impacts towards KBLM, KKM and DSL enhancement. Conditions within the PSM approach assert new challenges upon students, and therefore necessary effort were undertaken to self-identify learning concept. Student mistakes within task completion arose due to low comprehension upon particular concepts such as integral and derivatives. Moreover, students experience difficulties in identifying data and information given in the tests.
