Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh pesatnya perkembangan internet yang beriringan dengan kemajuan teknologi informasi. Seiring dengan meningkatnya penggunaan internet, akses informasi tumbuh dengan cepat dan menyebabkan keterbukaan informasi yang berujung pada information overload. Fenomena ini tentu memengaruhi mahasiswa akhir sebagai pencari informasi yang sedang membutuhkan informasi relevan dan kredibel untuk menyelesaikan skripsi. Tujuan dilakukannya penelitian ini yaitu untuk menciptakan perubahan atau peningkatan positif dalam praktik pencarian informasi mahasiswa tingkat akhir di Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia melalui diagnosis, perencanaan, implementasi, serta evaluasi pencarian informasi menggunakan logika Boolean. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian tindakan dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Adapun teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah observasi, wawancara, dan studi dokumentasi. Partisipan dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 24 orang mahasiswa. Lalu, dalam penelitian ini ditemukan dua siklus. Hasil penelitian siklus pertama menunjukkan bahwa dalam tahap perencanaan pencarian informasi mahasiswa merasakan kebingungan dan kecemasan. Di situasi tersebut pula mahasiswa melakukan brainstorming untuk menentukan topik penelitian. Pada proses implementasi, mahasiswa mulai mengeksplorasi dan merumuskan pencarian secara spesifik menggunakan operator Boolean serta berangsur-angsur mengumpulkan informasi yang didapat. Adapun di tahap evaluasi sebanyak 20 partisipan merasa puas dengan hasil pencariannya yang relevan dan empat lainnya merasa belum puas serta mengalami kebingungan dalam penggunaan operator Boolean. Namun, setelah dilakukan tindakan lanjutan hasil di siklus kedua menunjukkan tiga partisipan merasa puas dan memahami penggunaan operator Boolean ketika pencarian informasi dan satu partisipan hanya memahami penggunaan operator Boolean saja. Dengan demikian, mahasiswa mampu mengatasi information overload yang dialami dengan menggunakan logika Boolean sebagai strategi pencarian informasi. This research is motivated by the rapid development of the internet which conjoint with advances in information technology. As the use of the internet increased, information access grows rapidly and causes disclosure of information which leads to information overload. This phenomenon certainly affects final-year students as information seekers who are in need of relevant and credible information to complete their thesis. The purpose of this research is to create positive changes or improvements in the information-searching practices of final-year students at Indonesia University of Education through diagnosis, planning, implementing, and evaluating using Boolean logic. This research uses action research method with a qualitative approach. The data collection techniques used were observation, interview, and documentation. The total participants of this study are 24 students. There were two cycles in this research. The first cycle showed that, in the planning stage of information-searching, students felt confused and anxious. In this situation, the students also brainstormed to determine research topics. In the implementation process, students began to explore and formulate specific keywords using Boolean operators and gradually collected the information obtained. As for the evaluation stage, 20 participants were satisfied with the relevant search results and the other four were not. However, after further action, the second cycle showed that three participants were satisfied and understood the use of Boolean operators when searching and one participant only understood the use of Boolean operators. Thus, the students were able to overcome the information overload experienced by using Boolean logic as an information-searching strategy.
