Abstract
Teaching English in primary schools can be both a rewarding and a demanding experience. Not only children do have unique characteristics, but they also have different strengths and weaknesses. There is an urgent need to provide a wide range of learning activities to accommodate the uniqueness. This qualitative study focuses on whether the multiple intelligence theory was exercised in its class; and what advantage and barrier were. A male English teacher who taught first and third grader students in an elementary school in Bandung served as respondent. Through class observations, interviews, and document analysis, it was depicted that the observed teacher applied the nine multiple intelligence-based teaching strategies proposed by Armstrong (2009); brainstorming, rhythms, songs, raps and chants, body answers, kin body answers, kinesthetic concepts, visualization, classifications and categorizations, peer sharing, choice time, and personal connection. This study indicated the teaching not only enriched learning atmosphere, but also enabled students to demonstrate their best though teacher needed to be knowledgeable, aware of, and skillful in applying the intelligence-based teaching.
