Abstract

The goals of this research paper, entitled “The Correlation between Vocational Students’ Language Learning Strategies and Their WJEPT Scores”, are to examine whether or not language learning strategies correlate with the students’ English achievement as indicated by their WJEPT Scores, and to identify what language learning strategies are most frequently used by the students in their language learning process. To meet these goals, 105 students of a state vocational school in Bandung were hired to be the sample of this study. This study applied descriptive method with qualitative and quantitative approach in analyzing the collected data. The data were collected from three kinds of instruments used in this study namely SILL questionnaire, WJEPT scores documentary, and interview. Using Pearson Product Moment formula, the result of this study reports that the correlation between students’ language learning strategies was very strong (r=0.978, p=0.000). Furthermore, the students’ frequency of language learning strategies employment was placed in medium frequency with metacognitive strategies as the most popular strategies applied by the students (M=3.01, SD=0.65) and affective strategies as the least popular strategies employed by the students (M=2.83, SD=0.60). Shortly, the finding of this research concludes that the appropriate employment of language learning strategies significantly contributes the students’ language achievement. Thus, language learning strategies are deserved to have serious attention from both language teachers and language learners.
