Abstract

This paper was conducted based on descriptive study which describes the fictional phenomenon in the novel focusing on gender identity change. This paper entitled An Analysis of Gender Identity in Shakib’s Samira dan Samir was aimed to investigate and find the gender identity change experienced by the main character in the novel. Men and women are treated differently because their sex and gender difference are reflected in Samira dan Samir by Siba Shakib. The identity change from woman to man experienced by the main character becomes the main focus of this paper and sex and gender issue which appeared through the main character’s identity change is the background of this study. Text analysis was used to analyze the identity change of the main character. The data were collected by identifying the textual evidences related to identity change in the novel and then they were classified and analyzed based on the feminist perspective. The identity change showed that as a woman, the main character was constructed to be a man and commanded to undergo her life as a man. And according to feminist perspective, the identity change from woman to man experienced by the main character is considered as the oppression, because the existence of the main character as a woman was ignored and forgotten.
