Abstract

This study, entitled “Code Switching in the Friendster Comments”, aims to investigate the use of code switching among friendster users. This research paper covers three major problems, namely: the occurrences of the types of code switching, the frequency of each type that appeared in the comments and the reasons why that friendster users did code switching. This study involves only Indonesian friendster users as the participants. The data were collected through friendster users’ comments and questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed by applying theory given by Poplack (1980) to identify the types of code switching that occurred in the comments. On the other hand, regarding the reasons why friendster users did code switching, the study shows there are 5 reasons related to the theories given by Hoffman (1991) and Saville-Troike (1986). The findings show that friendster users did code switching in their comments. Apparently, all the three types of code switching occurred, such as tag, intrasentential, and intersentential switching. However, in this study, it seems that intrasentential switching tends to be the most frequent type of switching that occurred in the comments. Apart from the types of code switching, the study revealed there are 5 reasons why friendster users did code switching occurred in the friendster comments. They are because of real lexical need, talking about a particular topic, expressing group identity, intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor and interjection (Inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors). However, most of respondents stated that they did code switching for fulfilling real lexical need.
