Abstract

This research entitled “Teaching Speaking English through Pictures in Improving students’ Speaking ability” is aimed to find out the whether the use of pictures is effective in improving students’ speaking ability and to find out the students’ responses of learning speaking English through pictures. Quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test is used in conducting the research. Therefore, two classes, each of which consists of 35 students, were selected to be samples of this research, one class as the control group and another one as the experimental group. The treatment was given in five sessions and oral speaking test was used as the research instrument on pre and post-test. Then, the scores of both groups were analyzed by using independent t-test. Based on the scores of independent t-test, experimental group students have higher speaking scores (M =7.15, SE = 1.270) than control group students (M = 7.05, SE = 1.225). Students’ speaking ability in both groups was totally different as indicated by t (68) = 3.810 and sig. = .000, p < .05 with a large effect size (r = .0.548). In addition, the students’ responses through the interview also reveal that pictures are significantly effective in improving students’ speaking ability. The finding shows that pictures are suitable media for students speaking procedural text. By using pictures, the students can increase their ability in speaking. The experimental students say that pictures helped them to memorize the vocabularies easily, improve their fluency, build their confidence, and create an interesting fun activity. Therefore, the uses of pictures are recommended in teaching speaking English.
