Abstract

This research paper entitled "The Effectiveness of Peer Feedback in Improving Writing Skill of First Grade Students in Junior High School in Writing Descriptive Texts" is aimed at investigating whether or not peer feedback is effective in improving student's writing skill, whether or not peer feedback is better than conventional method in teaching writing, and finding out student's responses towards peer feedback. The subjects of this study were the students of class VII B of MTs Negeri Ciwaringin that were named as the experimental group and the control group respectively. The students of this class were divided into two groups, 21 students were treated by using peer feedback and the other 21 students were treated using conventional method. This study employed a quasi experimental design (non equivalent pre-test post-test control group design) which involved administering two kinds of instrument, writing test and questionnaire. The writing test was used to investigate student's ability in writing before and after the treatment, and the questionnaire was used to investigate student' s perceptions towards peer feedback. The results of this study show that after the treatment there is a significant difference on student's writing skill between the experimental and the control group. The findings also show that there is a significant difference on the experimental group's pre-test and post-test scores. Furthermore, the results show that there is no significant difference on the control group's pre-test and post-test scores. Moreover the results of the questionnaire show that almost all of the students prefer to use peer feedback in their writing activity. Therefore, it is concluded that peer feedback is effective in improving student's writing skill.
