Abstract

The title of the study is “Students' Reading Preferences for Multi-Genre Books in Literature Subject A Survey toward Senior High School Students of Language Program in Bandung Area, West Java”. This research is to find the growth of understanding of students' reading preferences and teaching literature: students' reading preferences for multi-genre books, and their attitudes toward teaching literature. Using survey method, the data of the study were collected by administering close and open-ended guestionnaires to a group of students. The data were gathered from December to January 2007 which involves 412 students from 10 senior high schools in Bandung. The distribution of gender is 33 percent male and 67 percent female. The results indicate that students preferred reading horror, fantasy, comic, historical fiction, mystery/detective, teen lit and religion books. Students also gave positive responses toward teaching and learning literature. Since the research can give factual data of students' reading preferences and interests, it is expected the results of the study would become guideline for teachers to apply it in. their classrooms.
