Abstract

Improving student’s mathematical problem solving abilities is one of the goals of implementing mathematics learning process in elementary schools. So that it encourages researchers to examine the mathematical problem solving abilities of fifth grade students in solving Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) types. The purpose of this study was to describe the level of problem solving abilities possessed by students to overcome HOTS type questions given to students based on the stages of problem solving G. Polya. This study uses descriptive qualitative research methods. This research was conducted in one of the State Elementary Schools in Bandung City for fifth grade students in which two subjects were selected in each category (Low, Medium, and High). The research instruments are in the form of tests (question sheets) and interviews. The results of the research are (1) The problem-solving ability in subject 2 is that students can understand the problem, are able to make plans but students can't put it into notes, students can work on plans that have been made, and students can re-check their answers, (2) On subject 3 students have not been able to understand the problem well, but the other problem solving stages have been mastered by students, (3) In subject 6 and subject 4 students have not been able to understand the problem, but students are able to formulate plans and implement solutions, but students do not check back the results of the answers, (4) In subject 5 students have not mastered the stages of planning and do not re-check the results of their answers, but they have mastered the other stages of problem solving, (5) In subject 1 students have not been able to arrange several plans, carry out plans and recheck, but students can understand the problem well.
