Abstract

Research articles have been considered as one of the most important genres in academic writing. Of all sections, an abstract plays a crucial role as the first reference to derive essential information regarding the main point of the paper. This study aims to reveal the manifestation of rhetorical structures of abstracts written by inexperienced Indonesian authors in the field of soft and hard science. A total of forty-seven (47) abstracts from a pre-training session of an academic workshop were taken as the data. Hyland’s (2000) five-move model was adopted to identify the rhetorical structures of the abstracts. The moves and steps along with the linguistic realization were analyzed. The analysis found that all elements of moves i.e Introduction-Purpose-Method-Result-Conclusions in the abstracts were written by the authors in the soft and hard science field. Different strategies in writing abstracts were employed by the authors in soft and hard science. Further comparative research on abstracts with different disciplines is suggested for further investigations.
