Abstract

The mastery of active and passive sentences in this study is a part of children first language acquisition, namely Indonesian. This study aims to describe the mastery of thematic roles in Indonesian active and passive sentences resulting from the speech produced by 4-year-old children. This study is focused on the thematic role in active and passive sentences of the 4 year olds associated with the types of process within the active and passive sentences. The qualitative descriptive approach was employed. The data were in the form of speeches produced by the participating 4-year-old children, 5 in total. The data were collected using two ways, namely case study and corpus data. The data analysis was conducted using the theory of thematic roles proposed by Andrews (1958) and Radford (1988) and Halliday’s theory of types of process (2014). The results show that the thematic roles mastered by the children in active sentences include the agent, agent+patient, agent+beneficiary, agent+instrument, agent+location, and agent+goal. In passive sentences, the thematic roles mastered include the patient and patient+agent. The types of process in the active and passive sentences of the 4 year olds are dominated by the material process, mental process, relational process, and behavioral process. Based on these findings, it shows that children aged 4 years are able to use complex sentences, namely active sentences and passive sentences. In addition, children aged 4 years have not only mastered verbs but have mastered the meaning of verbs which can affect sentence structure and the thematic roles of nouns.
