Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk menyelidiki apakah Program Membaca Ekstensif (ERP) dapat membantu meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa pada salah satu Sekolah Menengah Atas di Provinsi Riau. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi perubahan dalam keterlibatan literasi siswa terhadap penerapan ERP sebagai kegiatan ekstrakurikuler dan untuk mengetahui tantangan yang dihadapi oleh siswa, guru, dan pengelola program ER. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian metode campuran. Data kuantitatif diperoleh dari tes membaca pemahaman dan kuesioner. Data kualitatif dikumpulkan melalui wawancara dan observasi. Dalam analisis data kualitatif, memoing, kategorisasi dan pengkodean data digunakan. Sementara itu, dalam analisis data kuantitatif, analisis statistik dengan menggunakan Paket Statistik untuk Ilmu Sosial dan sains (SPSS) 16.0 digunakan. Temuan mengungkapkan bahwa Program Membaca Ekstensif memberikan kontribusi yang signifikan dalam meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa. Berdasarkan temuan dari observasi kelas, menunjukkan bahwa guru dan siswa telah menerapkan program ER dengan benar dan efektif dengan keterlibatan yang lebih besar. Para guru sering menerapkan penjabaran prinsip-prinsip bacaan ekstensif di setiap pertemuan meskipun ada beberapa kegiatan yang tidak dilaksanakan dalam beberapa pertemuan. Selain itu, berdasarkan temuan dari kuesioner dan wawancara, para siswa memperoleh perubahan positif dalam keterlibatan literasi siswa untuk pelaksanaan program ER dan mereka menunjukkan minat yang lebih besar untuk berpartisipasi dalam program ini. Itu ditandai dengan peningkatan motivasi membaca siswa, mengubah kebiasaan membaca mereka, dan mengubah sikap membaca mereka. Selain itu, ada beberapa tantangan yang dihadapi oleh siswa, guru, dan pengelola program selama pelaksanaan program yang dapat menjadi pertimbangan bagi peneliti berikutnya. Akhirnya, direkomendasikan kepada guru bahasa Inggris supaya mengimplementasikan program ER sebagai kegiatan ekstrakurikuler di tingkat Sekolah Menengah Atas dengan tujuan meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa dan untuk mengembangkan literasi mereka. Kata kunci: program membaca ekstensif, pemahaman membaca, motivasi membaca, kebiasaan membaca, dan sikap membaca. ABSTRACT The purpose of this study to investigate whether the Extensive Reading Program (ERP) can help to enhance the students’ reading comprehension of a Senior High School in Riau Province. Moreover, the research also aims to explore the changes in the students’ literacy engagement toward the implementation of ERP as an extracurricular activity and to find out the challenges encountered by the students, teachers, and program administer of the ER program. The research employed a mixed-method research design. The quantitative data were obtained from a reading comprehension test and a questionnaire. The qualitative data were collected through interviews and observations. In the analysis of qualitative data, memoing, categorizing and coding the data were employed. Meanwhile, in the analysis of quantitative data, statistical analysis by using the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) 16.0 was employed. The findings revealed that the Extensive Reading Program gives a significant contribution in enhancing the students’ reading comprehension. Based on the findings in the classroom observations, it was shown that the teachers and students had implemented the ER program properly and effectively with greater involvement. The teachers frequently implemented the elaborations of the principles of extensive reading in every meeting even though there were some activities that were not implemented in some meetings. In addition, based on the findings from the questionnaire and interviews, the students obtained the positive changes in the students’ literacy engagement to the implementation of the ER program and they showed a greater interest in participating in the program. It was marked by an increase in students' reading motivation, changing their reading habits, and changing their reading attitude. Furthermore, there were some challenges encountered by students, teachers, and program administer during the implementation of the program which can be a consideration for the next researcher. Finally, it is recommended that English teachers should implement the ER program as an extracurricular activity at the senior high school level to improve the students’ reading comprehension and to develop their literacy.
