    Abstract

This research is motivated by the low ability of students understanding mathematical concepts in learning mathematics at one of the public elementary schools in Bandung city. Based on these problems, ELPSA approach (Experience, Language, Picture, Symbol, and Application) is suggested to improve students understanding of mathematical concepts and to describe the increased ability to understand mathematical concepts after applying the ELPSA learning approach. The research method used Classroom Action Research by adapt the Kemmis and Mc Taggart models consists of four stages: planning, acting, observing and reflecting, which is carried out in two cycles. The participants of this research are the students at the C and D class of 4th grade elementary schools students at SDN C, Bandung city, totaling 24 students. This study used a qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis. The results showed an increase in students mathematical concept understanding abilities, namely in the first cycle by 58% with an average of 46.7 and the second cycle increased 82% with an average of 77.5. This study conclude that the application of the ELPSA approach can improve understanding mathematical concepts of 4th grade elementary school students at SDN C in Bandung.
