Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating the benefits gained by teacher and students from the implementation of role-play in teaching speaking to young learners and finding out the students’ response toward the implementation of role-play in teaching speaking to young learners. Nine seven-graders of Junior High School in academic year 2016/2017 in Tangerang participated in this study. Moreover, this study employed a qualitative research design and a case study as the research methodology. The data was obtained from classroom observation, document analysis, and interview at the end of the teaching and learning activities. The result revealed that role-play was an appropriate and effective technique in teaching speaking to young learners. It was found that there were three benefits gained by the teacher by using role-play in teaching speaking to young learners. First, role-play helped the teacher in terms of efficiency of time and energy; second, role-play facilitated teacher’s role as a participation support, and third, role-play could create a great atmosphere in the classroom. From the students’ point of view, the benefits focused on two things; they were speaking aspect benefits and speaking strategy benefits. Finally, the students’ responses to the use of role-play in teaching speaking to young learners have indicated some interesting points. In other words, the use of role-play technique has a significant influence on young learners’ speaking activity. ..... Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki manfaat yang diperoleh oleh guru dan siswa dari penerapan teknik bermain peran dalam mengajarkan keterampilan berbicara kepada pelajar muda dan mencari tahu bagaimana respon siswa terhadap pelaksanaannya. Sembilan siswa kelas tujuh SMP tahun akademik 2016/2017 di Tangerang berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Selain itu, penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian kualitatif dan studi kasus sebagai metodologi penelitian. Data diperoleh dari observasi kelas, analisis dokumen, dan wawancara pada akhir kegiatan belajar mengajar. Hasil penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa bermain peran adalah teknik yang tepat dan efektif dalam mengajarkan keterampilan berbicara kepada pelajar muda. Ditemukan bahwa ada tiga manfaat yang diperoleh oleh guru dari penggunaan teknik bermain peran dalam mengajar keterampilan berbicara kepada pelajar muda. Pertama, bermain peran membantu guru dalam hal efisiensi waktu dan energi; kedua, bermain peran memfasilitasi peran guru sebagai pendukung partisipasi siswa, dan ketiga, bermain peran dapat menciptakan suasana yang kondusif di kelas. Dilihat dari sudut pandang siswa, manfaat yang diperoleh fokus pada dua hal; yaitu dari segi aspek berbicara dan strategi berbicara. Selanjutnya, tanggapan siswa terhadap penggunaan teknik bermain peran dalam mengajar keterampilan berbicara kepada pelajar muda mengindikasikan beberapa hal menarik. Dengan kata lain, penggunaan teknik bermain peran memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap aktivitas berbicara pelajar muda.
