Abstract

In the fields of linguistics and education, language attitudes are widely considered an important aspect of successful foreign language learning and language policy implementation. Derived from the mentalist perspectives, this case study investigated students’ attitude toward the English language, the learning of it, and its use as a medium of instruction. 656 students from two boarding and two non-boarding schools of former Indonesian pilot international standard senior secondary schools (R-SMA-BI) in Pekanbaru were selected conveniently as respondents of the closed-ended and opened-ended questionnaire survey. Forty-four of these students volunteered to participate in semi-structured interviews. Statistical analyses were used to analyze responses from closed-ended questionnaires. Qualitative data obtained from responses to the opened-ended questionnaire and interviews were analyzed by using content analysis. The findings showed that there were commonalities of language attitudes between boarding and non-boarding schools students. The positive attitudes toward the English language revealed by the students reflected the uniformity of positive beliefs, feeling and behavior toward the language. However, some factors bringing on the inconsistency among belief, feeling and behavior toward learning English and English as a medium of instruction emerged as ambivalent attitudes. This study also indicated that interaction between some demographic profiles and sociocultural factors, and interconnection of three types of language attitudes played a major role in constructing students’ language attitudes. Based on the findings, this study provides insights for evaluation of language policy, English curriculum, and English teachers’ competence for further improvement of English language teaching in Indonesia or other similar contexts.
