Abstract
This study is aimed at investigating the teacher’s strategies at the stage of building knowledge of the field (BKOF) especially when teaching writing narrative text. The BKOF stage is intended to build the students’ prior knowledge before they can write effectively. This study used the scaffolding theory as it shares some similarities with the BKOF stage. Descriptive qualitative research was applied in this study. This design was applied because this study needs more exploration and understanding as the strategies that the teachers used may vary depending on the students’ needs and the classroom situation. Four instruments were used to collect the data; questionnaire, classroom observation, interview and document analysis. This study was conducted at one public Junior High School in Bandung. The accessibility becomes the reason of choosing the site and participants used in this study. The participants of this study were an English teacher who teaches in the eighth grade and one class of eight graders in academic year of 2016/2017. The findings showed that the teacher applied three main strategies in the BKOF stage, those are 1) asked students to translate in most of the class discussion; 2) build the students vocabulary; and 3) the point system. The findings mentioned before most likely failed to build the students’ prior knowledge related to the topic they are learning. ;---Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti strategi guru dalam tahapan building knowledge of the field (BKOF) terutama ketika mengajarkan keterampilan menulis teks naratif. Tahapan BKOF diperuntukkan membangun pengetahuan awal siswa sebelum mereka menulis. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori scaffolding yang memiliki beberapa kesamaan dengan tahapan BKOF. Metode penelitian kualitatif deskripsi digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Metode tersebut digunakan karena penelitian ini membutuhkan lebih banyak eksplorasi dan pemahaman karena strategi guru dapat berbeda-beda disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan siswa dan keadaan kelas saat itu. Empat instrumen penelitian digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data yaitu, kuesioner, observasi kelas, interview dan analisis dokumen. Studi ini dilaksanakan di sebuah SMP Negeri di kota Bandung. Sekolah tersebut dipilih dikarenakan mudahnya akses untuk melakukan penelitian di sekolah dan subjek penelitian. Subjek penelitian dalam penelitian adalah seorang guru bahasa Inggris kelas 8 dan satu kelas 8 tahun ajaran 2016/2017. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa guru menggunakan tiga strategi utama dalam tahapan BKOF yaitu, 1) meminta siswa untuk menerjemahkan dalam diskusi kelas; 2) membangun perbendaharaan kata siswa; dan 3) sistem poin. Dari temuan yang sudah disebutkan sebelumnya, dapat disimpulkan bahwa guru kurang berhasil dalam membangun pengetahuan awal siswa mengenai topik yang akan mereka pelajari.
