Abstract

;---This study aimed to identify the profile of mental models of heat conduction, profile students' conceptions, mental models with prediction relations and relations with the misconceptions of mental models. The exploratory mix methods designs was used in this study. Participants of this study were a class XI student of vocational in Bandung, which consist of 20 students to 59 students and qualitative data to quantitative data. Qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interview protocol with interviews from Chiou (2010) and quantitative data were collected using written tests with instrument Thermal Concepts Evaluation (Alwan 2010) developed in the form of a three-tier test. The results showed that there were 11 mental models by more than 90% of students have a mental model that is not scientifically acceptable, 81% student belonging to the category 3 (dominant misconceptions), the complex relationship between mental models with prediction and mental models intertwined with misconceptions because about 65% of students have a mental model that is not scientifically acceptable and everything is in category 3 (dominant misconceptions).
