Abstract

Penelitian ini menyajikan analisis dari amateur subtitling untuk film Comic 8,
sebuah film aksi komedi Indonesia, melalui sudut pandang multimodal. Penelitian
ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kolaborasi antara subtitle dan gambar dalam
menyampaikan makna adegan, serta melihat masalah-masalah yang berkaitan
dengan praktek amateur subtilting. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif-
kualitatif. Data yang digunakan untuk penelitian ini merupakan 15 adegan dari
film Comic 8, dan analisis data menggunakan tabel transkripsi multimodal yang
diadaptasi dari tabel transkripsi Chuang (2009) dan tabel cognitive frame
Mubenga (2009). Kolaborasi antara subtitle dengan mode-mode non-verbal pada
adegan-adegan film dapat dilihat melalui hubungan antara elemen verbal (dialog
dan subtitle) dengan elemen-elemen non-verbal (gambar dan suara), dengan
mengacu pada konsep hubungan teks-gambar yang diusulkan oleh Barthes (1977,
dalam Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006) dan konsep redundancy yang diusulkan oleh
Marleau (1982, dalam Díaz-Cintas & Remael, 2014). Berdasarkan analisis,
ditemukan bahwa mode-mode non-verbal utamanya berfungsi mengilustrasikan
situasi pada adegan, sementara subtitle memiliki fungsi utama untuk menegaskan
kembali makna dalam adegan. Selain itu, ditemukan pula bahwa mode-mode non-
verbal pada beberapa adegan dapat memengaruhi proses subtitling sehingga
berimbas pada transformasi atau perubahan subtitle. Penggunaan reduksi teks (text
reduction) juga dapat didorong oleh hubungan teks-gambar yang mencerminkan
adanya redundancy. Terakhir, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa pembuat subtitle
amatir masih harus menghadapi masalah-masalah dalam penerjemahan, termasuk
penggunaan reduksi teks yang tidak efektif dan ketidaktepatan dalam
penerjemahan kosakata yang berkaitan dengan budaya tertentu. Berdasarkan
penemuan-penemuan tersebut, ada beberapa saran yang dapat ditawarkan,
termasuk penyediaan pelatihan pembuatan subtitle dan peningkatan kemampuan
penerjemahan dan kecakapan bahasa Inggris bagi para pembuat subtitle amatir.--------- The present research provides an analysis of amateur subtitling of Comic 8, an
Indonesian action-comedy movie, from a multimodal perspective. It aims at
finding out the collaboration of subtitles and moving images in conveying the
meanings in the scenes, as well as issues related to the amateur subtitling. The
research is descriptive-qualitative in nature. The data used for the research are 15
scenes taken from Comic 8 film, and the analysis involves the use of multimodal
transcription table adapted from Chuang’s transcription table (2009) and
Mubenga’s cognitive frame table (2009). The collaboration of the subtitles and the
non-verbal modes in the scenes can be observed from the relationship between
verbal elements (dialogue and subtitles) and non-verbal elements (moving images
and sound) in the film, referring to Barthes’ concept on text-image relationship
(1977, in Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006) and the concept of redundancy proposed
by Marleau (1982, in Díaz-Cintas & Remael, 2014). Based on the analysis, it is
found that the non-verbal modes mainly function to illustrate the situation in the
scene, while the subtitles mainly function as the restatement of meanings in the
scene. In addition to this, it is also found that the non-verbal modes in some
scenes can influence the subtitling process, resulting in the transformation of
subtitles. Moreover, the use of text reduction can also be triggered by the text-
image relationship in the scene reflects redundancy. Furthermore, the research
found that amateur subtitle producers still have to deal with translation issues,
including ineffective use of text reduction and improper translation of culture-
related items. Based on these findings, several suggestions have been offered,
including providing training on subtitling and improving the subtitle producers’
translation skills and English proficiency.
